The Best Entrance To Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park has main entrances on the north, west, and south sides of the park. When I first visited from LA, I followed signs for the west entrance and ended up in a very long line of cars that had done the same. Now that I live here, I can confidently say that the north entrance is the best entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. Here are the top 5 reasons why.

1. Avoid The Lines

The last thing anyone wants to do after a long drive is wait in a long line. Lines at the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park pile up quickly, especially on the weekend. After you enter the park, you will be stuck behind that same slow line of cars. The extra drive to the north entrance (if you’re coming from LA or San Diego) is worth it to avoid anything messing with your view and weekend vibes.

2. Be The First To The Main Attractions

The most Instagram worthy attractions are on the side of the park closest to the north entrance. Use this entrance and arrive early to get a bit more time for snaps at Skull and Arch Rocks.

3. See The Park Transform Before Your Eyes

The main road of the park is a U shape connecting the north and west entrances. Starting from the north entrance in 29 Palms, you’ll experience the full transformation of the park landscape. The barren volcanic geology will quickly grow into forests of joshua trees and the out-of-this-world boulders. Heading north to west will also serve up an epic feast for your eyes at sunset.

4. End the Day In The Shade

After a day spent at the park, you will be tired, you will be hungry, and you will definitely be thirsty. The city of 29 Palms has a lot to offer (including an amazing breakfast bakery), but not as much as Joshua Tree when it comes to cold-beverage-patio situations. For this reason, it’s best to enter from the 29Palms north entrance and exit to the land of chill hangouts for a drink on the rocks after a long day exploring the rocks.

5. Did I Mention The Sunsets?

I haven’t mentioned the south entrance. It really only makes sense if you’re heading up from south of Indio. Even when coming from San Diego, I still choose to enter the park through the north entrance.

No matter which entrance you choose, have a great time at the park and be safe!
