Top 3 Spots For An “Out Of This World” Joshua Tree National Park Experience
For those who are looking to have an out of this world experience in Joshua Tree, there are a few spots we recommend where you can explore stars, planets and those that live among them (supposedly). In fact in 2021, it was reported that Demi Lovato had an encounter with extraterrestrials while visiting Joshua Tree. Here are our top 3 places to increase your chances of a close encounter while visiting Joshua Tree National Park.
1. Giant Rock
While the name “Giant Rock” might not be that indicative of a destination where there have been reports of extraterrestrial sightings. It is a place many come to in hopes of having an encounter.
And beyond being a stop for those seeking a meet and greet with our friends from other planets, Giant Rock is actually the largest freestanding boulder in the world. It is roughly seven stories high and 5,800 square feet and has an interesting history all to its own. Starting with prospector Frank Critzer residing below the boulder between 1930 and 1940. Critzer who was being investigated by the local police then passed away as a result of him self detonating a dynamite explosion. Following this, Giant Rock was then used a gathering place by UFO believers. This was started by Integratron builder George Van Tassel, who was also a friend of Critzer's.
Fast forward to 2000 when the Giant Rock was fractured in two. How did it split? No one knows, but there are speculations from aliens to the earth’s magnetic field. When visiting today, you will find not only the Giant Rock, but since it’s become popular there has been an increase in the art that you will find on the fractured pieces. It’s important to note that the road leading to Giant Rock is not maintained and a 4-wheel SUV is recommended.

2. Integratron
No visit to Joshua Tree is complete without a stop to the Integratron located just north of Joshua Tree in Landers, California. The Integratron was created by George Van Tassel and inspired by the design of Moses’ Holy Tabernacle, the writings of Nikola Tesla and extraterrestrials. While its design references should be enough to capture your interest, the more unique part of this property listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service, is its location that causes magnometers to spike.
Between its shape and being at the center of a magnetic force field, the Integratron is the perfect backdrop and location for creating a connection to planets (and their life forms) beyond ours. After all, the Integratron was created by Van Tassel who rehomed his family to tents next to Giant Rock where he conversed with “space people” who shared hidden truths and gave him the direction to construct a hemispherical umbrella dome or the Integratron.

3. Sky's The Limit Observatory And Nature Center
If you are craving an out of this world experience, and amazing nighttime photos, make sure to visit the Sky's The Limit Observatory and Nature Center, which is in the WKNDR Airbnb’s backyard. At the Observatory, which is just beyond the north entrance of Joshua Tree National Park, you have the opportunity to view solar telescopes and take in the darkest skies outside the park, and perhaps you will also possibly identify a flying object or other life form. The center also holds unpromoted monthly events that you have to be an insider to know about. If you’re interested in attending one of these events reach out to us and we’ll provide the next date.
At these events, you will watch a projection of the telescope and benefit from the knowledge of local docents. The Observatory also features nature and wilderness trails, a meditation garden, sculptures, giving you plenty to do during the day in addition to gazing at the night sky and ample opportunity to have an out of this world experience while visiting Joshua Tree National Park.
