Most often think of Coachella and Stage Coach when it comes to high-desert outdoor music experiences, however between the amazing weather and the rich community of artists, musicians and creators there are a number of other musical experiences in the 29 Palms and Joshua Tree areas that should be on your radar. The following are our top 3 outdoor music experiences to consider adding to your itinerary when planning your first or next trip to the WKNDR at Joshua Tree National Park (Book Here).
1. Joshua Tree Music Festival
This twice-a-year musical experience happens in May and October at the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park and was founded by Barnett English in 2003. While music is the main focus of this four-day festival, it also includes experiences beyond sound and is inclusive and appropriate for all ages. And while you may not know who all the performers are quite yet, you will soon as they are all on the rise and worthy of the stage they are performing on. Artists who have been a part of the Joshua Tree Music Festival, include Elle King, the Avett Brothers, Brett Dennen, John Butler Trio, Trombone Shorty, Deer Tick, Trampled by Turtles, Chicano Batman, Railroad Earth, Orgone, Valerie June, and Greensky Bluegrass just to name a few. Beyond the amazing performers at the Joshua Tree Music Festival (some of which have gone on to win a Grammy) there are also art installations, a yoga and healing stage, as well as ample culinary, including organic options, experiences.
2. Concert at Pappy And Harriet’s
This is a destination in and of itself. Although a bit of a drive being in Pioneertown, no one comes to the high desert without a visit to Pappy and Harriet’s. This is an institution and an iconic landmark that has been serving as the spot for locals and travelers alike since 1982. It’s known for its good times, eats and drinks and of course its concerts. Many a legendary musician has performed here, from Paul McCartney to Lizzo to Lorde to Lucinda Williams to Peaches and many more, which is why it makes our list. 3. The Wonder Valley Experimental Festival
Highlighting experimental music is the two-day Wonder Valley Experimental Festival based in Wonder Valley at the Palms Restaurant, a desert roadhouse. While the festival has changed hands from its original founder to Mark Soden it has been providing alternative music and sound experience for more than decade. Past performers have included Costa Mesa-based Phog Masheeen, a sound art and video collective that uses a mix of aerophones, idophones, and electronics to generate a unique listening experience for audiences that is also paired with live mixed video. For those who are unsure if this is exactly up their alley, it’s worth noting that the festival is free and recommended for those who are 18-years-of-age and older.
